How can we respond to the attack on the dignity of human life, so prevalent in our times in the ‘culture of death’ in which we are immersed? St Maximilian Kolbe, Patron of the Pro-Life Movement, explained to his Friars that only Prayer can lay the foundation for the conversion of hearts. In many developed countries, such as those in North America and Europe, where the attack on the unborn is most pronounced and where the capacity to change this intrinsically evil legislation seems almost impossible, we must through God’s mercy and Mary’s intercession seek to make the notion of abortion unthinkable. In a recent talk to SPUC in 2017, Dr Joseph Meaney from Human Life International encourages us , “… not just to fight to make abortion illegal, but to make abortion unthinkable".

Have we not one million reasons now to make an International Holy Hour each week, on Thursdays from 7pm to 8pm (GMT)? This is how many of our brothers and sisters are being crucified each week globally. Msgr Philip Reilly, founder of the Helpers of God’s Precious Infants, responsible alone for the conversion of thousands of mothers contemplating abortion at the abortion centres, realised after the unfruitful tactics of Operation Rescue in the USA in the pro-life early days, that only prayer and putting God in the centre works. He told us amazingly that during the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers on 11th September 2001, the only operation that continued to function was the abortion mill in Brooklyn. Moving to Ground Zero upon the ground of desolation and destruction, he began to pray the rosary. He could not help but make an analogy. The comfort of the workers within their safe working environments earlier in the day being brutally infringed by the terrorist instruments of aggression. This was analogous to the child in the womb desperately trying to escape from the instruments of the abortionist.

How far have we come? Today is the survival of the fittest! The most dangerous place for survival is paradoxically in the place which God creates as the safest – the womb of the mother. To prevent wholesale collapse in the defence of the voiceless in places like Ireland - where according to Fr Marcel Guarnizo, a referendum is an injustice in itself: “ It is immoral to have a referendum on Life, so in Ireland we cannot morally decide who lives and dies. We cannot pass a law and give the nation the power to have the right for someone to live or die. This is immoral and undemocratic to try and abort the unborn out of existence. This is then an illicit and unconstitutional vote.…", - Northern Ireland, Malta, and even Poland, the last bastions of hope for the dignity of life and stop the unjust steamrolling towards the decriminalisation of abortion and infanticide in the UK, we must Pray, Pray, Pray. But not just in the USA or Europe, but globally.

Friday 25th May is a monumental day fast approaching. What is happening this day. We'll if you don't know for several years now many doctors in Ireland have been sending pregnant women to England for abortions. The High Court has determined that the 8th Amendment in the Irish Constitution is the only legal protecting that a baby in the womb has right now. What should be cast in stone is now being challenged by the forces for so called "freedom of choice" for the Mother, and the Irish public are now being asked to repeal this protection for the "voiceless" unborn in the womb. Remember that it has been stated that 100,000 lives haven been saved by this Constitutive Act passed on 7th September 1983. Remember in addition, that the safest place in the world should be inside the womb of the mother but this has become nowadays the most dangerous place for survival. Abortion is now the greatest cause of death worldwide with about 50 million lives of our brothers and sisters taken each year.

Why is this Irish referendum so important for us in the UK and in fact globally? Not just because Ireland is geographically so close, or because many of us are from Irish Descent, but the legal and political protection of the unborn by the Eighth Amendment has been identified as a "bastion" and watertight piece of legislation. If this falls then the "domino" or ripple effect could have major consequences in all countries who are pushing for more liberal abortion laws. Even in the UK, we have already seen political appetite for "decriminalisation" of abortion. Where will we end in this cycle, perhaps even infanticide. What can we do in England to help the Irish in the Referendum on 25th May to keep the Eighth? Simply said, we must storm heaven even at this late stage. What we plan at the last moment is to propose for all willing Parishes in the UK, on the eve of the referendum starting at 10pm on Thursday 24th May - 8 hours Adoration to #savethe8th - ending at Friday 25th May at 6am with the Sacrifice of the Holy Mass and the crowning of a statue of Mary in Her month of May under the title of Our Lady of Knock.

In Irish, the word for unborn "Beo gan Bhreith" directly translates as "Alive but not born yet". Let us spread the word to Adore Jesus Christ and bend our knees in humility through the intercession of Our Lady of Knock. We are an Easter people - let us pray with certainty in our hearts that God will grant us grace where good will prevail over evil in this battle to eliminate the slavery of abortion. We are up against the world, but we have Almighty God on our side. All the angels and saints and Our Lady of Knock, please pray for us!

What can we do now for Ireland but Pray Pray and Pray. The fruit of pray is never wasted even though 66.4% of the votes in Ireland wen't against Life and the unborn in the referendum. Just as in John's Gospel Chapter 6 and verse 64 ( 6:64), we see that it is only the spirit that gives life and this is the passage on the Holy Eucharist where many don't believe in Life - Jesus Christ. They walked away as all those who voted against Life in Ireland. We will continue however with a New Strengthened Resolve to protect the Unborn because the only winners in this referendum were those who voted according to God's Designs.

When Pope Paul VI reaffirmed the Church’s infallible teaching on marriage, and condemned contraception as intrinsically morally disordered in the 1968 encyclical, many academics and even clergy rejected Humanae Vitae. In the midst of the sexual revolution, when much of society had accepted birth control and members of a papal commission tasked with a five-year study of the issue seemed to be pressing the Pope to approve it, Humanae Vitae became one of the most controversial papal encyclicals in history. Since its promulgation in 1968, a lack of solid catechesis and preaching on the Church’s teaching by bishops and priests has only compounded ignorance and confusion among Catholic laity. A Pew Research Center poll conducted in September 2015 found that roughly half or more of U.S. Catholics say that using contraceptives is not a sin. We need to adore now Jesus Christ to make sure that this solid teaching and Truth is left untouched.

"Contraception Leads to Falsification, Deception…" Released in 1968, at the height of the hippie revolution with its optimistic doctrines of "free love" and emancipation from tradition and authority, Pope Paul VI's encyclical Humanae Vitae was widely dismissed as the proverbial killjoy at the greatest party the world had yet seen: the sexual revolution. Blessed Paul VI's four "prophesies" about what would happen if contraception became normalized – from an increase in marital infidelity to totalitarian implementations of forced birth control by governments – are certainly bleak. However, it is worth drawing attention to another set of predictions contained in Humanae Vitae, ones that get far less attention than they deserve.

Humanae Vitae - Time and again, Pope Paul VI insists that he is not imposing some arbitrary standard, but instead pointing to an order that is woven into the fabric of the universe, and which humans transgress at their peril. Human beings are made in the image and likeness of God. Their sexual faculties, with their creative potential, are designed by God to be used in a certain way, mirroring God's own self-giving love and creative fecundity. Human beings' technical triumph in suppressing the creative potential of sexual intercourse does not, he warned, alter that underlying design. For that reason, the technological triumph is only apparent, a meaningless victory.
